The ESP32-C6 is the first affordable chip that speaks WiFi, Bluetooth LE, AND Zigbee/Thread — all for $10. That last part matters because Zigbee and Thread are the protocols your smart home devices actually use. This chip can talk directly to your Philips Hue lights, your Apple HomePod, or your Home Assistant setup. No cloud. No middleman.
Most microcontroller boards are hobbyist curiosities. The ESP32-C6 is different: it speaks the same language as $200 commercial smart home products, built into a $10 dev board you can program over USB from your laptop. That’s a fundamentally different kind of access.
These projects take you from blinking an LED based on a web event all the way to building a native Matter device that Apple Home and Google Home recognize without any custom app or cloud service. Pick your entry point and follow the thread.
Why ESP32-C6?
Not all ESP32s are the same. Here’s the landscape:
| Chip | WiFi | Bluetooth | Special |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESP32 (original) | WiFi 4 | BT Classic + BLE 4 | General purpose workhorse |
| ESP32-S3 | WiFi 4 | BLE 5 | AI acceleration, USB OTG |
| ESP32-C6 | WiFi 6 | BLE 5 | Zigbee + Thread + Matter |
The ESP32-C6 runs a RISC-V core instead of the Xtensa architecture used by previous ESP32 chips. It’s single-core and not the fastest processor on the block, but that’s fine: smart home tasks are almost entirely I/O-bound, not compute-bound. WiFi 6 (802.11ax) handles congestion better in homes packed with devices, has lower latency, and supports Target Wake Time (TWT) for battery-powered sensors.
Bottom line: If you’re building anything smart home related in 2026, the ESP32-C6 is the default choice. Everything else is a tradeoff.
Projects
Several of these projects overlap with our ESP32 smart home collection but are specifically tuned for the ESP32-C6’s unique capabilities — WiFi 6, Thread, and Matter support.
Beginner
| Project | What you’ll build | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Room Temperature Dashboard | Live web sensor on WiFi 6 — lower latency, better in busy homes | ~1h |
| Smart Button | One-press Telegram messages and Home Assistant triggers | ~1h |
| Universal TV Remote | Control every IR device from a web page on your phone | ~1.5h |
Intermediate
| Project | What you’ll build | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Light Controller | Phone-controlled lamp with schedule and motion sensing | ~2h |
| Simple Home Alarm System | PIR motion zones with Telegram alerts and BLE proximity disarm | ~2h |
| MQTT Sensor for Home Assistant | Auto-discovery sensor that appears in Home Assistant like a commercial device | ~2-3h |
Advanced
| Project | What you’ll build | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Matter Light Bridge | Native Matter device — Siri and Google Home control, no cloud, no hub | ~3-4h |
The Matter Light Bridge is the crown jewel of ESP32-C6 projects. It’s the only project on this list that truly requires the C6 — Matter over Thread needs the 802.15.4 radio that only the C6 has among ESP32 chips. When you say “Hey Siri, turn off the workshop lights” and it works because your $10 board is speaking Matter natively, you’ll understand why this chip matters.
Parts Shopping List
| Part | Price | Link |
|---|---|---|
| ESP32-C6 DevKitC-1 | $10 | Buy |
| WS2812B LED Strip (1m, 60 LEDs) | $8 | Buy |
| DHT22 Temperature & Humidity Sensor | $4 | Buy |
Tip: Buy 3-4 ESP32-C6 boards at once. Unit price drops, and once you start on these projects you’ll want spares. At $10 each, burning one on an experiment isn’t the end of the world.
What to Build Next
If you’re new to ESP32 and these projects feel like a stretch, start with the ESP32 quickstart guide — it covers getting your environment set up, your first blink sketch, and connecting to WiFi.
If you’ve done all of these and want more, check out our ESP32 AI projects guide. It covers running TensorFlow Lite models directly on ESP32-S3 for edge AI inference — a different kind of superpower.
The ESP32-C6 is the right chip for smart home projects right now. Matter is gaining critical mass. Thread is already in Apple HomePods and Google Nest Hubs. For $10, you have a dev board that speaks all three.
